We know that the structure of the cable is generally composed of conductors, shielding layers, insulating layers and sheaths. Quality problems in each link will affect the use of the entire cable. Today we understand that there is a problem with the quality of the insulation layer. What kind of impact will it have on the cable?
Although both the outer sheath and the inner sheath of the cable have a certain insulation effect, in order to prevent the equipment from being damaged due to the short circuit of the exposed wires, and the wires exceeding the safe voltage cause harm to people, an insulating protective layer must be added to the cable. The main function of the cable insulation layer is to insulate the conductors in the cable from the surrounding environment or from adjacent conductors.
So what is the impact of unqualified insulation thickness on the cable?
1. It will shorten the service life of wire and cable products. After long-term operation, especially in direct burial, water immersion, open air or corrosive environments, due to long-term corrosion of external media, the insulation level and mechanical level of thin sheaths will be reduced. Also, routine sheath testing or line ground faults can cause thin point breakdowns. This will lose the protective effect of the cable sheath.
2. Internal consumption cannot be ignored. Long-term charged wires and cables will generate a lot of heat. Here is a little common sense to add that the allowable working temperature of the conductor is 70°C, and the long-term use temperature of PVC should not exceed 65°C. Therefore, wires and cables are actually in a state of "internal and external troubles". If the quality is not up to standard, it will cause fire and other safety hazards.
3. Increased the difficulty in the laying process. More and more environments require that the outer diameter of high-voltage cable products must be small. During the laying process, it is necessary to consider leaving a gap to dissipate the heat generated after the wire and cable are energized. If the cable is too large, it will increase the difficulty of laying. One of the characteristics of product quality is reflected in the appearance quality of the product. Regardless of power cables or simple wiring, attention must be paid to the quality of the insulation layer during production, and it must be strictly controlled and inspected.
You may have a doubt that lighting cables and low-voltage cables are covered with a layer of plastic or rubber insulation. However, the high-voltage cables in the wild do not have insulation?
This is because when the voltage is too high, some materials that are originally insulating, such as rubber, plastic, dry wood, etc., will also become conductors and will not be able to insulate. Packing insulation on high-voltage cables is tantamount to wasting money and things in vain. The surface of the high-voltage wire is not covered with insulation. If it is hung on a high iron tower, it may leak electricity due to contact with the iron tower.
In order to prevent this phenomenon, high-voltage wires are always hung under a long string of well-insulated porcelain bottles to insulate the high-voltage wires from the iron tower. In addition, when installing high-voltage cables, never drag them on the ground. Otherwise, due to the friction between the wire and the ground, the original smooth insulation layer will be damaged, and many burrs will appear, which will produce tip discharge, resulting in leakage.
It can be seen that the insulation layer of the cable is set according to the needs of the cable. In the production process, we need to carefully operate the equipment and strictly control the insulation thickness in accordance with the standard requirements, which not only saves resources for the enterprise, reduces material consumption, increases profits, but also ensures the quality of the cable and creates high-quality and low-cost products. Of course, pay attention to whether the insulating layer is damaged during use, and replace it in time if found.
